E' un censimento esaustivo, utilizzabile per tutte le specie, volto a determinare il numero minimo di soggetti presenti al momento dell'operazione nell'area oggetto d'indagine. Il metodo permette di censire solo una parte dei capi resenti con sottostime variabili a seconda della specie e delle caratteristiche ambientali.
Un censimento di questo tipo prevede:
